Yarn: Berroco Vintage Chunky (50% Acrylic, 40% Wool, 10% Nylon; 130 yards [120 meters]/100 grams); #6167 Dewberry - 1 skein, #6123 Blush - 1 skein, and #6185 Tide Pool - skein

Needles: One 16" circular needle in size 10, and one set of double-pointed needles (dpns), also in size 10

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker

Gauge: 14 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette

Using your circular needle and your main color (in our case, #6167 Dewberry), cast on 80 stitches, place marker, and join in round. Knit one set-up row as follows:
Set-up Row 1: * k6, p2; rep from *
And now we'll start the pattern on this one, which is Slipped Cable Rib from page 106 of Barbara G. Walker's A Treasury of Knitting Patterns, except adapted for the round. And here it is:

Row 1: * k6, p2 *
Rows 2, 3, 4, & 5: * slip 1, k4, slip 1, p2 *
Row 6: * drop slipped stitch off needle to front of work, k2, then pick up slipped stitch and knit it, being careful not to twist it; slip next 2 stitches, drop slipped stitch to front of work, slip the same two stitches back to your left-hand needle, then pick up dropped slip stitch and knit it; k2, p2 *
Knit rows 1 - 6 twice through. Then, on your next repeat, add your first accent color as follows. If you are knitting this hat as part of my three-skein hat trio and run out of your accent colors before you finish all four rows, just knit as many rows as you can before you switch back to the main color.
Row 1: in main color, * k6, p2 *
Rows 2, 3, 4, & 5: in accent color, * slip 1, k4, slip 1, p2 *
Row 6: in main color, * drop slipped stitch off needle to front of work, k2, then pick up slipped stitch and knit it, being careful not to twist it; slip next 2 stitches, drop slipped stitch to front of work, slip the same two stitches back to your left-hand needle, then pick up dropped slip stitch and knit it; k2, p2 *
Next, knit these six rows again, this time with your second accent color. After these two sets are done, return to the original, one-color pattern, and knit rows 1 - 6 twice more, and then row 1 once more. And now, we're on to the decreases!
Decrease Row 1: * ssk, k2, k2tog, p2, slip 1, k4, slip 1, p2 *
Row 2: * k4, p2, slip 1, k4, slip 1, p2 *
Row 3: * ssk, k2tog, p2, slip 1, k4, slip 1, p2 *
And you'll probably want to switch to your dpns right about now.
Row 4: * k2, p2tog, slip 1, k4, slip 1, p2tog *
Row 5: * k2tog, p1, drop slipped stitch off needle to front of work, k2, then pick up slipped stitch and knit it, being careful not to twist it; slip next 2 stitches, drop slipped stitch to front of work, slip the same two stitches back to your left-hand needle, then pick up dropped slip stitch and knit it; k2, p1 *
Row 6: * p2tog, ssk, k2, k2tog, p1 *
Row 7: slip first stitch to last dpn; then, * ssk, k2tog, p2 *
Row 8: * k2tog, p2tog *
Row 9: * k2tog *
Clip tail, thread through final 5 stitches and pull tight. Thread to inside of hat and knot. Tuck in ends.
